How do I request access to my personal information from an organization?

The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) requires an organization to give you access to your own personal information under the organization’s control.

Written request
Send your written request to the organization that you believe has your personal information, to the attention of the organization’s Privacy Officer. Include in your request specific information that will help the organization locate your personal information, such as account numbers, dates, and departments and names of people within the organization with whom you have had dealings.

Form to use for your requests

What you can ask for
If you ask, the organization must provide you with your personal information under its control, with information about how your personal information is used and the names of the individuals and organizations to which your personal information was disclosed.

How soon must the organization respond?
The organization must respond to you within 30 working days of receiving your written request (unless it qualifies for an extension) and cannot charge you more than a “minimal” fee for providing you with your information.

When an organization does not have to provide access
In some cases, an organization may not or must not disclose your personal information to you. For example, an organization is not required to disclose personal information that is protected by client-solicitor privilege or that would reveal confidential commercial information. Also, an organization must not disclose personal information in certain situations, such as where it may result in harm to you or someone else, or the information would reveal personal information about someone other than you.

If you are not satisfied with how the organization responded to your request
You may ask us to review the organization’s decision within 30 working days of your receiving a response from the organization. Click here for more details.  Please note, the OIPC does not accept requests for review via e-mail
